  • While most whales have a single stomach, some boast a more complex digestive system. Sperm whales have four distinct stomach chambers, while Baird’s beaked whales can have up to 13! These different chambers help break down and extract nutrients from their food.

  • The Antarctic blue whale is the biggest of all blue whales. It is also the largest animal on the planet, weighing up to 180 tons (approximately 36 elephants) and reaching up to 30 metres in length. They can consume about 4 tonnes of krill a day!

  • It is unknown when humans first began catching whales. The earliest archaeological record indicating whaling has been found in South Korea, where petroglyphs (dated to 6000 BC) show Stone Age people hunting whales with boats and spears.
