This phrase is a common saying in Britain and has morphed further into people believing green is the colour of jealousy. And to think it all started by a few words in a play.

  • The word green comes from the Middle English and Old English word grene, which, like the German word grün, has the same root as the words grass and grow. The first recorded use of the word as a colour term in Old English dates to ca. AD 700.
